I can see why you and Candace love the desert. Stunning!
That lizard owes me money!
Whatever you do, don’t lick that lizard.
Mr. Chuckwalla, as we learned from our Joshua Tree National Park map, is one of the lucky locals in this stretch of desert. Frankly, he was far too large for my taste (so no worries on the licking, Philbert).
A young teenage boy was watching the chuckwalla at the same time we were. I stood at a safe distance, ready to jump (and shriek, if necessary) if that lizard started to scamper in my direction. This kid, however, utterly fascinated, managed to lean over a rock and grab hold of the chuckwalla’s tail briefly as it ran under the rock you see in the photo. I had to laugh at how polar opposite our instincts were.
